Firing on the Pennsy
by Paul C. Dietz

available from the

It is 1943 and America is at war. On the homefront, America's railroads are straining to keep the wartime traffic moving. It was at this time that Paul C. Dietz “hired on” in Canton, Ohio on the Pennsylvania Railroad.

Firing on the Pennsy is Mr. Dietz's memoirs of life as fireman during steam's “last hurrah” on the Eastern Division between Crestline, Ohio and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania from 1943 to 1947.

Dietz tells the story of a railroader's life at that time, with rememberences of people and places that made life on the railroad a unique experience.

He also describes the skills and techniques needed to fire Pennsy's massive T1 (above), Q2 (left), M1a and K4 steam locomotives.

Dietz, in a straightforward and clear style, also tells engaging and informative stories about train handling, tragic accidents, and special wartime cargoes.
