Giving a Program

We are always looking for quality programs from railfans, railroad professionals, advocates, scholars and historians. We can supply a large screen, projection equipment (slides, 16mm movies, video or computer) and an appreciative and enthusiastic audience.

If you have a program to share, please E-mail us or talk to us at one of our monthly meetings.

About Our Meetings

We hold regular meetings at 7:30 PM on the first Friday of the month (except July and August), at the Gladys Fox Museum on the southwest corner of 9th Street (Illinois Route 7) and Washington Street in the historic downtown district of Lockport, Illinois. Click here for maps to our meeting place.

Doors open at 7:00 PM and there is plenty of free parking on Washington Street. If there is no wake scheduled, additional parking is available in the lot of the adjacent Goodale Memorial Chapel, in the 900 block of Hamilton Street. Admission to all meetings is FREE and guests are always welcome. Attendees are invited to participate in our monthly raffle of rare and interesting railroad memorabilia and models. Refreshments are available.

Meetings include a presentation on railroads by noted railfans, authors, historians, railroad professionals and/or railroad advocates. Recent programs have included:

  • DePaul University transportation professor Joel Schweiterman discussing his two-volume book “When The Railroad Leaves Town.”

  • A look at contemporary railroading in Illinois by nationally published photographer Paul Burgess.

  • Area historian Roy Jackson's program on the history and rebuilding of Joliet Union Station.

  • Rick Harnish of the Midwest High Speed Rail Association speaking about recent and proposed improvements to Chicago-St. Louis Amtrak service.

  • Presentations by industry expert Mike Blaszak about early Amtrak's “Rainbow Era” and railroading in New Orleans before and after Hurricane Katrina.

  • Transit historian Steve Hyett's program on the development, heyday and sudden end of the classic interurban, the Chicago, Aurora & Elgin.

  • Rare and unusual 16mm films taken in the 70s by the Elgin, Joliet & Eastern of their entire right of way as preserved in the Blackhawk Chapter archives.

...along with many other interesting and varied programs. See what you are missing by attending a Blackhawk Chapter meeting today!

Programs for Your Group

The Blackhawk Chapter can present programs on local railroad history for your organization. There are many possibilities -- a discussion of local railroad history, historic railroad movies and photographs, or even a visit from a 19th-century station agent!
